The Warmest Places to Travel This Winter

Winter weather is exciting when it first arrives: fresh, clean snow and crisp, cold temperatures signal the time of year to get cozy. But after a few weeks of chilly weather and snowfall, it’s hard to stay happy about overcast days and icy nights.

After spending months indoors, avoiding the cruel weather outside, you deserve a break. Just because it’s gloomy in your hometown doesn’t mean you can’t experience the long-ago summer sun. You simply need a vacation.

If you’re feeling stir-crazy thanks to winter cabin fever, consider these warm and sunny destinations perfect for a pre-spring vacation.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

With average January temperatures around 83 degrees Fahrenheit, Puerto Rico is an ideal winter getaway. From sparkling ocean water to warm, sandy beaches, Puerto Rico will get rid of those winter blues.

Plan a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico’s capital, and you’ll discover architectural wonders on every street. The buildings in Old San Juan are painted in brilliant hues that will cheer you up after a long, dull winter. If you’re up for adventure, visit El Yunque National Forest, where you can hike among the treetops, take in the grandeur of a waterfall and stroll through a high-altitude dwarf forest.

Those who just want to lounge on the beach can find stretches of white sand around every corner. You can enjoy Puerto Rico’s warmth for approximately $110 per night.

Willemstad, Curacao

If it’s a beautiful tropical destination you have in mind, Curacao is the best of the Caribbean islands. A small island just 40 miles north of Venezuela, Curacao blends Dutch culture with bright, sunny beaches – and the average temperature in mid-winter is 84 degrees.

With over 30 beaches, Curacao offers plenty of water activities, sunbathing, and snorkeling. Stay in Willemstad on the island’s southern coast, and you can walk to the beach, shopping destinations, restaurants, and more from any accommodations. A quiet island that’s less popular than many of its neighbors, you can escape winter’s grasp and relax under palm trees without the crush of tourist crowds.

Rates at most Curacao hotels average $150 per night, but if you’d like to stay in small, cozy bed and breakfast, you can find rates as low as $80.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Argentina tends to have warm, sunny weather from December to February – unlike North America, this southern country enjoys its summer during those months. Travel to Buenos Aires and take advantage of the city’s hot, tropical weather.

Argentina has everything imaginable for a warm weather getaway. You can tour a tropical rainforest, explore wine country, or visit working estancias. If you love the big city, Buenos Aires offers romance, tango experiences, and great food. If you want a little warmth without the beach, Buenos Aires is a lively city full of historical charm and exciting new adventures.

You can book a charming hotel room for as little as $50 in Buenos Aires. Want a little luxury? Fancier accommodations are priced around $140 per night.

Bangkok, Thailand

Thailand’s driest season happens November to February, meaning you can enjoy an average temperature of 80 degrees – a big improvement over snow! The different regions experience different weather patterns. All of Thailand is beautiful in January, and temperatures really start to heat up in February.

Escape to Thailand this winter, and you’ll discover attractions that are exotic and picturesque. Check out isolated beaches like Koh Kradan, Bamboo Island, or Tubkaak Krabi if you love lounging on warm sand or stunning ocean views. No matter where you stay, the beach is never far away, making it easy to walk or bike to the shoreline.

You can explore all Bangkok has to offer for around $100 per night. Want more tropical adventure? You can island hop around Thailand to see even more at a slightly higher price.

Palm Beach, Florida

Florida is one of the warmest places in the continental U.S. during the winter. Average January highs in Palm Beach stay around 75 degrees daily, making it a fantastic winter getaway if you don’t want to travel far.

Though it may be too chilly to swim in the ocean, take advantage of the many tourist attractions in the area. Downtown Palm Beach is filled with restaurants, clubs, bars, and shops. Want to explore more cultural entertainment? Visit the Norton Museum of Art, Ragtops Automobile Museum, or Manatee Lagoon. You can also stroll through Okeeheelee Park or Grassy Waters Nature Preserve to see Florida’s wildlife.

Hotel prices in Palm Beach start around $180 for four-star hotels. Stay on the city’s outskirts, or a short drive out of town, and you can get to vibrant and warm Florida for less.

Trade Snow Days for Beach Days

No matter where you decide to vacation this winter, choose somewhere warm! Taking a trip to a bright, sunny locale with summer-like temperatures offer the perfect break from chilly weather and snowy surroundings. As an added bonus, you can soak in some much-needed vitamin D and rejuvenate your spirit before you head home to wait for spring to arrive. Winter won’t see so rough after a few days on the beach!
